In the Animal Kingdom

There are few restaurants in the newest of Disney’s parks, and most that exist are counter-service or grab-and-go places (of these, the Flame Tree Barbecue is the best). Nevertheless, there are three notable enough to list.

Expensive

Tusker House AFRICAN/AMERICAN The thatched-roof Tusker House in Harambe village now features a bountiful buffet with a definite culinary flair. Several stations, each with a different selection of African-inspired items, are located throughout the inviting open-air market-style interior. Blatjang chutneys with South African preserves, sambals tabbouleh, hummus and baba ghanoush, curried rice salad, couscous with roasted vegetables, vegetable samosas, seafood stew, roasted chicken, and a variety of other offerings are all on the menu. Kids will find a selection of familiar favorites (including PB&J, chicken drumsticks, mac ’n’ cheese, and corn-dog nuggets) to please their pint-size palates. A character breakfast (Donald’s Safari Breakfast) is offered in the morning. A slightly shaded stone patio out back, with a view over the trees, allows you to relax and enjoy your meal tucked away from the crowds. Out front, the pavilion offers shade and—if timed right—a view of the live entertainment. Beer and wine are served. Note: Reserved seating for the 3:15pm showing of Finding Nemo–The Musical is available for guests who book advance lunch reservations (btw. 1 and 1:40pm).

In Africa, near entrance. www.disneyworld.com. 407/939-3463. Advance Reservations suggested for breakfast. Breakfast $25 adults, $13 kids 3–9; lunch $21 adults, $12 kids; dinner $29 adults, $14 kids. AE, DC, DISC, MC, V. Daily 8–10:30am, 11:30am–3:30 or 4pm, and 4–6pm. Parking $14.

Moderate

Rainforest Cafe ★ CALIFORNIAN Expect California fare with an island spin at this Rainforest and its cousin. Menu offerings tend to be tasty and somewhat creative, with far more choices than most can contend with. That said, the cafe, like other Disney restaurants, tends to fall on the pricier side. Fun dishes include Monsoon Grill (macadamia-crusted snapper with shrimp scampi and Caribbean coconut shrimp), Rumble in the Jungle Turkey Wrap (with romaine, tomatoes, and bacon), and Mojo Bones (slow-roasted St. Louis–style spareribs with safari fries). Tables situated among the dining room’s dense vines and generally inanimate animals are usually packed; that’s partially due to the lack of other full-service dining options at Animal Kingdom, but also due to the actual popularity of this loud (thanks in part to the cracks of thunder and chatter of animals) and lively establishment. Beer, wine, and other alcoholic concoctions are served.

Just outside Animal Kingdom entrance. Park admission not required (though there is an entrance from inside the park, too). www.rainforestcafe.com. 407/938-9100. Advance Reservations strongly recommended. Main courses $9–$14 breakfast, $13–$31 (most under $25) lunch and dinner. AE, DC, DISC, MC, V. Daily 8:30am–6 or 7pm. Parking $14.

Yak & Yeti ★ ASIAN FUSION/PACIFIC RIM Animal Kingdom’s newest dining spot opened in Asia (near Expedition Everest) in the fall of 2007. This Pan-Asian restaurant offers both sit-down and counter-service dining in a uniquely eclectic and meticulously detailed setting that blends seamlessly into the Himalayan village surrounding it. The menu features such specialties
